Wedding Food »

wedding cake

In my experience, wedding food is either really good — or really bad.  It doesn’t make sense because we think of weddings as these expensive, well-planned events where everything is perfect.  I think what happens, though, is that people are so alarmed by the cost of wedding food that they try to cut corners where they shouldn’t be.

Here are my tips for making sure that you find a good wedding caterer.

  • Plan on it being expensive.  Honestly, I think you ought to be planning on about $100 per person.  It’s a generous amount, but wedding food is often expensive.  Planning a bit on the high side ensures that you won’t make bad decisions based on sticker shock.
  • Do a fairly exhaustive search in your area.  For example, for a Boyne City wedding you might want to search Michigan wedding caterers within a generous radius.  Be sure to also look for reviews online, or ask your venue and/or wedding consultant for recommendations.
  • Always do a test-run.  A good caterer will offer you the opportunity to taste different selections before settling on a final menu for the wedding.  After all, your purchase with them is probably pretty large, and besides, it’s your wedding day — they should be treating you like royalty!

Trust me, you never want to be remembered as the wedding with the nasty food.  Being realistic about the expense and taking your time to find a good caterer are the best ways to ensure your wedding food doesn’t suck!

Meaningful Beauty is Making a Resurgence »

Beauty trends tend to come and go. One hot trend that is making a comeback in a big way is the trend towards meaningful beauty styles. This is something that was important in the 1970’s. It disappeared for awhile but it’s making a resurgence during the recession as people’s priorities shift.

What is meaningful beauty? This is an approach to beauty that considers both inner beauty and outer beauty. Some features of this way of approaching beauty include:

  • Using organic, eco-friendly beauty products. People want to be pretty without damaging the earth around them.
  • Taking a preventative approach to the issue of aging. People are staying beautiful longer by protecting their skin, drinking a lot of water and getting enough exercise.
  • General recognition of the value of inner beauty. This doesn’t mean that outer beauty is compromised. We all want to look good! We just realize that there’s more to life than style. We want substance along with our style these days. That was true in the 1970’s but it’s something that got lost in the materialism of the 1980’s and 1990’s. It’s nice to see it make a comeback!

Basically people believe in a kind of beauty that honors the whole you while still allowing you to show off the best features of your body.

Offering More to Our Customers »

For the longest time, I thought that I knew what was best for my customers.  We operate a general store in a small town, and we also have a pharmacy in our building.  Instead of listening to what the customer’s wanted, I decided what to carry in our store.

After just two years, we were not doing so well.  In fact, it was to the point where I had to take a serious look at our operations and decide if it was even worth keeping our doors open.

But I’ll never forget what happened when I sat down and talked about my problem with my best friend, Jake.  He suggested that all my problems stemmed from one small thing:  I wasn’t listening to my customers.

I took his advice (as I had no real options left) and asked the customers what they wanted on our shelves.  We had numerous responses from human growth hormone, to canned air, and we have tried to answer them all.

Thankfully, it was the best advice that I could have ever received and business is doing better than ever.  All I had to learn was that I wasn’t always right – in the end the customer knows what they want.  I just had to learn how to listen.
