Nine Hours on the Freeway, and Only One Car in Front of Me

I recently drove my 1990 Volvo from Seattle to Sacramento, a road trip that usually takes about 13 hours or so – depending on how fast I feel like driving 750 miles. What was not usual about the trip though was the car I was stuck driving behind for about 9 of those 13 hours. It started just south of Tacoma, when I got back on the freeway after grabbing a little breakfast. In no more than 5 minutes, a van with custom license plates and vinyl lettering all over the back doors pulled out in front of me.

At first, it was fun. The van was easily the most visible vehicle on the road thanks to its proximity right in front of my windshield. The collection of window graphics and other random bits of extra information the van’s driver was interested in sharing with the world made for good reading. Unfortunately, it eventually made for much less interesting reading after about 20 minutes when I had read the entire van and was having much greater difficulty getting around the vehicle’s excessive bulk. Eight and a half hours later, the van was still, somehow directly in front of me and had become an incredible burden on my sanity. That said, always drive around the interesting cars – they’ll drive you insane.
