Designing My 1920s Wedding Invitations

When my husband and I got married, we planned a 1920s wedding to go with the wedding dress I’d found — a beautiful ecru gown from 1929. We decided the best thing was to have wedding invitations in keeping with our theme, so I set about planning the perfect invitations to go with a 1920s wedding.
Although the traditional style of wedding invitations — a page of formal text, usually printed in calligraphy or a similar font, on the face of a stiffened card (no fold) — would have been used in the 1920s, we decided we were interested in going with more contemporary wedding invitations. We liked the look of modern photo invitations, so that was the style we went with — a black and white photo of swans for our main invitation (swans was another theme in our wedding decorations), and a piece of 1920s art for our reception inserts.
Of course, we didn’t want to spend a fortune on photo invitations (we were on a very limited budget), so we also decided to go with DIY wedding invitations. There are lots of wedding invitation kits out there for do-it-yourselfers, so we were able to buy the envelopes I wanted separately. For the invitations themselves, I printed them on the heaviest cardstock I could find in our local office stores, and then trimmed them with a paper cutter (for the nicest edges).
Once you get the invitations figured out, there are plenty of other things you can do to make your event feel like a step back into the 1920s. Here are some other ideas for planning a Roaring Twenties themed party or wedding!
