Tribal Tattoos in modern society

Knowing about my deep appreciation for history, specifically the transformation of ancient societies into modern ones, a friend recently sent me a book she purchased from Amazon on tribal tattoos. At first I wasn’t sure what to think about her intentions.
We went to college at roughly the same time, so we had many friends in common. There was more than one Sunday morning when mutual acquaintances would stumble into our dorm rooms complaining about the night before. More often than not, their complaints had less to do with the fact they now had permanent ink marking up their body. No, the overwhelming majority of our friends complained about the tattoo designs they had “chosen” in (usually) inebriated states.
Upon receipt of the book, I was taken back to those days, and with a smile on my face, began leafing through its pages. Once I started reading about the decline of real tribal tattoos and the increase of them in first world fashion, it became clear what my friend’s message to me was all about.
As our society as a whole becomes more advanced through technology and intellect, there are aspects that we must stay in touch with. The use of tribal tattoos in the modern world is one way we are able to make that continued connection. At least this is what I think she was trying to tell me!

I have a friend that has many tattoos and has a story for each one. To her the tattoos are like momentos from her life. She got a tattoo when she graduated college and when she got married and now she got one when she had her first child.
