What You Can Eavesdrop on While Having a Cesarean

This is sort of a weird story, but it sure got me thinking about all of the stress and worry that doctors must go through. I was having a C-Section for my son two years ago, and they were halfway into sewing me up when the thread broke. They had to start all over again, which is maybe why they felt a little more inclined to start gossiping or speaking of things they shouldn’t while they were sewing me up.
Maybe they didn’t think I’d really be listening, but there was only the obstetrician and a nurse in the room working, so they started chatting about a colleague. This colleague had formerly been in the Ob-Gyn practice with this Ob, and as a matter of fact had been my original doctor-before she disappeared. The two began to speak of how she was doing, whether she was doing any better, and whether she’d ever really get over “what happened.” My impression was that they were speaking of a medical tragedy that occurred to one of her patients during her watch.
It got me to thinking about how much physicians put themselves out there emotionally. And financially, too, of course. I know that there is physician disability insurance in the event of job loss due to injury, but what about job loss due to emotional trauma caused on the job? Can you get disability insurance quotes for that? It might be worth exploring disability insurance companies just to see the varieties of things offered. I know that I, as a teacher, have a little bit of mental health coverage. Definitely food for thought.
