Ripping Off Copper and Stuff

My husband is a home inspector, and it is amazing some of the things he finds-or doesn’t find-now that the economy is so bad.  For instance, once a house is vacant and under contract, many times he’ll arrive for the inspection only to find that things are missing. He’s been to houses where the light fixtures are missing, and where the outdoor garden wall fountains are missing.  Sometimes the appliances are gone…even the furnace and water heater. The funniest one was when he went into a crawl-space only to find that someone had been under there and had sawn off all of the copper pipe that led up into the house itself.

It’s a very sad situation and indicative of the times.  I can see someone stealing a wall fountain, and even appliances, but wow!  The copper situation is something that’s even been in the news in regards to old warehouses and worksites, but actually crawling into a crawl-space and sawing off the piping is really desperate!  He even had a house where they cut off the drywall and removed the copper piping that way.  And it’s such a sad situation for someone who is so desperately trying to sell their house.  You can tell people are just watching for when it’s not being shown constantly-when it’s actually under contract.  Scary.
