The Worlds Largest Hydroelectric Project

It was constructed in 1935 and is the world’s largest concrete structure.  The Hoover Dam borders Arizona and Nevada and was named after America’s 31st president, Herbert Hoover because of his role in the construction of it.  If you’ve ever experienced it in person, it’s hard to believe such an enormous structure was built in approximately 4 years. However it was estimated to take approximately 125 years for the concrete to cure and set.

Many people may not realize that the dam houses a massive turbine-generator powered plant that supplies parts of CA, NV, and AZ with power.  It also diverts the river and houses 20 massive flow meter installations to manage the water.  There is a great deal of attention to keep the Dam running effectively, including constant monitoring of water flow measurement.  They also utilize an impressive hydraulic system with mass air flow to maintain their operations.

The Dam is filled with superstition and lure as it is overwhelming in size and mastery.  You cannot help but reflect on the 112 men who lost their lives to build it.  The Dam was once a beacon of hope for many who needed a job during the depression. Their hard work lives on through the architecture and the service that the Dam provides for generations to come.
