Why Don’t You Get a Job

The latest in the life of my sister-in-law often reminds me of the Offspring song “Why Don’t You Get a Job.”  She has been refusing to work, but gets all kinds of upset when her husband — my husband’s brother — can’t afford the lifestyle she wants.

The thing is, she could totally get a really good paying job.  She has training as a nurse, and although she is tired of working in nursing homes, there are plenty of other jobs she could get.  For instance, she could work in a hospital or a doctor’s office, maybe even a pediatrician’s office.

However, one thing I think would be really ideal for her would be to work for a company providing home care.  She would only have to care for one patient or client at a time, and she would probably be able to set her own hours to some degree.  Since she already has her RN, if she went through a homemaker companion training program she would be both experienced and qualified.  Many of these companies will also provide some basic caregiver training, such as having employees watch caregiver DVDs, so getting some additional training might not even cost her anything.

However, she has steadfastly refused any suggestions that she get a job, whether it be in the form of a friendly nudge or a more forceful ultimatum.  It’s too bad, really — she is dragging my brother-in-law down, and it puts a lot of stress on my husband and their parents to watch it happen!
